‘The Forest of Rokingham after the olde perambulation is about a 20 miles yn length, and in bredthe 5 or 4 miles in sum places, and in sum lesse. There be dyvers lodges for keepers of the fallow dere yn it. And withyn the precincte of it is good corne and pasture and a plentie of woodde.’     John Leland 1546

The Forest lies in the county of Northamptonshire, England. These web pages provide a unique insight into the changing character of the rural historic landscape of Rockingham Forest from the medieval period through to the late 19th century. The evidence presented shows how much of what we value in the present landscape originated, something that is essential to understanding how to manage and conserve it for future generations.

The resource centre has been developed for the Trust with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund with additonal support by various other organisations. Much of the material presented here  was also published in an Atlas of Rockingham Forest by the Northamptonshire Record Society in late 2009.
